A NEW DAY 6

266

Sudden gunshots from the movie startled me. I chuckled and snapped out of my thoughts. I decided to lie in the sofa for a while, I wanted to go to the bedroom by the time Henry was asleep to avoid arguments.

I woke up to cold showers of rain. I reluctantly woke up from the bed and walked towards the window. I pushed the curtains aside and watched as the showers poured down. Henry came out of the washroom already dressed up. I glanced at the clock and it was 5am.

“Why was he leaving this early in spite of the drizzling?” I wondered but kept mute.

“Good morning,” I greeted when he pulled out his suitcase.

“Good morning,” he responded. “I’m off to work, see you in the evening,” he said and started walking towards the door.

“Alright, enjoy your day,” I managed to say before he was out of the door.

I sighed. It baffled me to see single ladies who were desperate to enter into marriage. I usually felt like going somewhere far away and never returning or that my fancy little wish would come pass; that I will wake up to a brand new day.

I sighed again and realizing I had to be out of the house by 6am, I entered the bathroom to prepare for work.

The day was almost over. I parked my car and realized Henry’s car was already there.

“Henry’s home rather early,” I thought to myself.

I opened the door to the hall gently. My eyes were widely opened from what I saw. Henry laid in the sofa with bottles of beer on the center table. I took the bottle, scanned it and looked intently at his face as he laid in the sofa. I knew he was drunk.

“Aww Henry, why would you do this to yourself?” I mumbled, placed my handbag down and cleared the table. I ensured that he was well positioned in the sofa and went to the bedroom.

The following day, I realized Henry was asleep in the bed besides me. He was awake yet still lying in bed.

“Good morning,” I greeted.

“Good morning,” he responded still staring at the ceiling.

“Sweetheart, you know you can talk to me. What is it? What’s going on? What can I do to help? I asked out of concern.

He was still staring at the ceiling as though I was a ghost.

“No matter what it is, you know it can be better solved when…”

“When what, Herty, when what? What is it with you? Did I do anything wrong by getting married to you? Now my life is so miserable. Just look at me, I’m a shadow of my old self. Nothing is going on well and you’re here acting all like mother Theresah with some inspirational quotes. Please let me have a peaceful morning, at least,”

Henry blurted.

Quietly, I left for the bathroom and took a shower. I couldn’t tell if it was the shower that was all over face or the hot tears that were oozzing out. Well, I would say the shower concealed my tears but inside of me was a well, a well of fresh hot tears gushing out uncontrollably.

I kept quite long in the bathroom before coming out, crying as much as I could. After dressing up, I picked my bag and headed to my car which was parked outside our three-bedroom apartment. Henry was in the bathroom at that time. Because he was already angry, I didn’t even bother to say anything to him.

I sat in my car and was about to move when my phone rang.  It was a foreign number.

“Who could be calling this early?” I wondered as I answered the call.

“Hello!….Hello!”

“Herttttyyyy….How are you?”

“Selly, is that you?”

“Who else would it be? How are you girlfriend?”

“Woooooooow! I can’t believe my ears. I’m good and you? It’s been such a long while, I thought I was never going to hear from you again.”

“Aww, I know. Things got a little hectic here but everything is fine now.”

“That’s great to hear.”

“Guess what?”

“What?”

“Debbie and I are coming to Ghana for the Christmas holidaaayyys”

“Oh my…you don’t mean it.”

“We are coming to Ghana live, so make preparation for us. We need to catch up and we’ve got to paint Accra red, girl.”

“Of course, just update me on your trip. I will make plans for us to have fun.”

“Sure girl, I have to go. Be safe.”

“You too, girl.

I screamed in my car which was still parked outside our apartment. I couldn’t contain the joy of knowing that Selly and Debby were going to be in town. At least I was certain of a little fun in my boring life…
