It is wrong to pray for God to create a clean heart and a new spirit within them. You are already made new in Christ. You are one with the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God in you cannot be defiled. So you don’t need a new spirit or heart after you sin. You already have them in Christ eternally.
- Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me.
David continues to pray that God should not cast him from his presence or take his Spirit from him. Is it possible for the Spirit of God to leave the child of God? We will see that soon.
Notice that in the Old Testament, the Spirit of God was not dwelling in people. He came upon them for special functions. However, in the New Testament, we have the Spirit dwelling in us. Note what Jesus said about the Spirit;
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
He said he will pray to the Father to give us another comforter who will abide with us forever. Jesus never indicated that the Spirit will leave us when we sin. He said he will be with us forever. That means he will be with us whether we sin or not.
God dwells in us by his Spirit and has promised to be with us forever. Look at what the book of Hebrews also says;
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
He has said that he will never leave us nor forsake us. That means that his Spirit will never leave us nor forsake us. This is more than a promise. It is a reality because of our union with Christ. He is the head and we are the body. The head can never leave the body. This is because we are joined together as one.
1 Corinthians 6:17
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
We are one Spirit with the Lord. We are joined together in such a way that you cannot determined where we end and where God begins. We are mixed together as one. That’s why God cannot leave you. He’s one with your Spirit…
