ALREADY FORGIVEN! 3
Forgiveness, therefore, is not something God does after we have pleaded and cried to him. It is something he has already done as a result of Christ’s sacrifice. We receive it through faith in Christ.
FORGIVEN FOR HIS OWN SAKE
Sin separated us from God, but God still loved us and made forgiveness available. It was for his own sake that he forgave us. He didn’t forgive us because we deserved it. He forgave us because he wanted to. He forgave us because he wanted to justify us and give us eternal life.
Isaiah 43:25 says:
I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
Ephesians 1:7 also says:
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
We have the forgiveness of sin not according to our goodness or according to how diligent we confess our sins. We have forgiveness according to his grace. So God has forgiven us eternally all by himself without any human effort.
This means that even before you committed your first sin in this world, God had already provided forgiveness for you in Christ. This became a reality when you accepted Christ Jesus. So in Christ, your sins have been blotted away.
Forgiveness is a provision of grace. It is your reality once you are in Christ.
Colossians 1:14 affirms this;
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:..
