LIFE IN THE CITY Season Two(Episode 28)

Because exams was fast approaching, I decided to create time alone to study in the library.

I was in the library one Friday when Raymond appeared.

“Why are you stalking me?” I asked.

“Hahaha! Stalking you? Really? So I can’t come to the library to learn anymore?” He said laughing.

“Did you come here to learn or to see me?” I asked with a grin.

“Sorry to disappoint you, lady but I came here to learn and not to see you,” He said.

“I know you are lying but never mind,” I said.

He sat down beside me and brought out his book.

“I hear your church will be having a conference on campus soon,” Raymond asked after a while.

“Oh yeah, it’s called Christ Conference. Last semester’s edition really blessed me. I was going through a tough situation but the message Pastor Emmanuel preached just changed my life. I hope you will be there?” I asked.

“Sure sure,” Raymond said in a pensive mood.

“Why, what are you thinking about?” I asked.

“Do you think God can forgive someone who’s has done something really bad, like someone who has destroyed other people’s lives, their families, marriages and even businesses?” He asked.

“Well, I don’t think it’s good to do something like that. However, Jesus died for everyone so no matter what you have done, it has been paid for by the blood of Jesus. So he has already forgiven you.

The bible says: For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:19),” I said.

Raymond was just quiet and kept staring into the air thinking.

“This few weeks have been very different for me. I have been thinking a lot. You know what? The first time I came to the church, I just wanted to impress you,” He said and stared at me to see my reaction.

I said nothing so he went on.

“But then I heard things that got me thinking. So I left right after the message. What I heard was too much for me, so I kept thinking about it and decided to come again to see if I could get my questions answered,” He said.

“Araba,  he continued, all my life I’ve been searching for just a little love, someone who could love me without demanding anything. I never got that from my mum or dad. They just thought I was a problem. My parents weren’t ready to marry but I showed up and their families pressured them to marry to avoid the disgrace of a child born out of wedlock.

So I was that child that hindered my parents from achieving their goals and aspirations. I came at a time when I was not wanted and they made it obvious to me. So I left home as a teenager and got involved with these boys, who got me into a lot of mess,” He narrated.

“My life is now a mess. And to think that a God somewhere could love a wretch like me? Araba be sincere, do you believe that?” He asked looking right into my eyes.

I was quiet. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know a guy like him could have such a story.

“To make matters worse, some months back, I met this lady whom I really loved. I loved this lady but I don’t know what it is…whether it’s a demon in me or what …I…”

“Hey Araba, I’ve been looking for you,” I heard a voice from behind. I turned to look and it was Benjamin, my course mate.

“Looking for me?” I asked.

“Yeah, I want you to explain something to me,” he said.

I turned to look at Raymond.

“Go ahead, I will see you another time,” Raymond said, placed his book in his bag and left…
